The Ben Daniels Memorial Fund
Launched 16th March
2012
The Ben Daniels Memorial Fund has been set up by the family and friends of Ben to work with CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young) to reduce the frequency of young cardiac death.
The aim is to fund the
screening of
young people within the sporting communities within which Ben
played his sport.
Many people have asked that Ben’s Memorial Fund be set up to provide a fitting tribute to Ben so that he can be remembered for what he achieved in his life and what he is leaving us with, a cause in his name for the benefit of others.
Each week in the UK at least 12 apparently ‘fit and healthy’ young people die of undiagnosed heart conditions. By raising awareness and providing screening opportunities through CRY our aim, in Ben’s name, is to prevent similar tragedies.
CRY was founded in 1995 to raise awareness of conditions that can lead to Young Sudden Cardiac Death (YSCD); Sudden Death Syndrome (SDS); SADS
CRY's Vision
2012
To work with cardiologists and family doctors to promote and protect the cardiac health of our young by establishing good practice and screening facilities devoted to significantly reduce the frequency of young sudden cardiac death throughout the UK
All money raised is held by CRY in a ring fenced fund to sponsor screening programmes within Ben’s sporting communities as well as raising awareness of Cardiac Health in young people.
Highlighted in the news page are past, present
and future events that are being held to raise money for the Ben
Daniels Memorial Fund. If we have missed any please do let us
know.

'Having held the view for many years that anyone who wants to run 26 miles must be mad – I mean, that’s what cars are for!
We bring children into this world – we care for and protect them to the best of our abilities. As parents, our deepest fear is that something may happen to our children, in the way of accident or illness. I had never even considered that a normal, healthy boy of 15 would just collapse and die.
Ben had suffered Sudden Cardiac Death – sometimes abbreviated to SADS – a condition I had only vaguely heard of from a professional footballer, Marc-Vivien Foé, suffering the same during a game in 2003. I hated the training. I hated the idea of the run. It’s not something I am doing to say that I have done it – but I did it because I am sure that Ben and other children who have suffered from this condition would love to be here and running about - but unfortunately they are not.
If I can succeed in raising the profile of CRY and making you all aware of this condition, we can provide extra money to allow CRY to carry out screening. If only one person is found to have this condition before it is too late and another set of parents are saved the horrific anguish of losing a child, then it will have all been worth it.'
